What Is Paint Protection Film (PPF)? A Guide for Car Owners in India
What paint protection film is, how PPF protects car paint, the finishes available and what to know before installing PPF on your car in India.
Paint protection film, usually called PPF, is a thin, flexible film applied over a car's painted panels. It sits between the paint and the road, taking the light abrasions, minor stone chips and everyday marks that would otherwise reach the paint.
What PPF is made of
Most modern paint protection films have a flexible film body with an adhesive on one side and a protective topcoat on the other. The topcoat is where much of the technology sits: self-healing properties, water repellency and the gloss or matte look of the film.
Every EAGLE PPF film is made from TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) and built in layers: topcoat, film body, adhesive and a release liner that is removed at installation. See how EAGLE PPF technology works or read what TPU PPF is.
What PPF helps protect against
- Light scratches and swirl marks from washing - Minor stone chips from highway driving - Bird droppings, tree sap and insect residue - Everyday scuffs around door handles, bumpers and boot edges
PPF reduces the risk of damage reaching the paint. It does not make a car immune to accidents, deep cuts or heavy impacts.
Where PPF is installed
Owners choose between full-body coverage and partial coverage of high-impact areas such as the bonnet, front bumper, mirrors, headlamps and door edges. Full-body PPF gives the most even protection and look. Partial kits cost less.
Finishes available
- High-gloss: clear film that keeps the paint's original look and reflections - Clear matte: turns gloss paint into a satin finish - Coloured PPF: changes the colour of the car while protecting the paint - Interior PPF: precut film for screens and piano-black trims
Why installation matters
PPF is only as good as its installation. A trained installer cleans and decontaminates the paint, cuts or plots the film for each panel and applies it so the edges are clean and secure.
How long PPF lasts
Lifespan depends on the film, the installation, the climate and how the car is cared for. The warranty is a useful guide to what a manufacturer stands behind. EAGLE PPF Standard Series carries a 5-year peeling and non-yellowing warranty, and HyperShield carries 8 years for peeling and 7 years for non-yellowing, subject to the official terms.
