PPF Thickness Explained: What Microns Mean
What PPF thickness in microns means, how thickness relates to protection and how EAGLE PPF Standard, Spectra and HyperShield compare.
Paint protection film thickness is measured in microns. One micron is one thousandth of a millimetre, so a 200-micron film is about 0.2 mm thick.
Why thickness matters
A thicker film puts more material between the road and the paint, which can help it absorb more of the energy from small impacts. Thickness also affects how the film handles during installation: thinner films are often easier to stretch around curves, while thicker films feel more substantial.
Thickness is not everything
The quality of the topcoat, the adhesive and the installation matter as much as the number. A well-made, well-installed film will do better than a thicker film that is poorly applied.
EAGLE PPF thickness by series
- Standard Series: 190 microns, 250 sq ft roll, high-gloss and clear matte - HyperShield Series: 210–220 microns, 250 sq ft roll, high-gloss - Spectra Series: 190 microns, 250 sq ft roll, coloured gloss and matte - Interior Precut: 190 microns, vehicle-specific patterns
Which thickness should you choose?
For most cars, the 190-micron Standard Series gives dependable self-healing protection. If you want the thickest film in the range, with HyperHeal, an Ultra-Hydrophobic Topcoat and Crystal Gloss, choose HyperShield.
